Test Time Requirements of Circuit Breaker Timers

Timing measurements are the most typical circuit breaker testing. These timing tests are performed to assess operating time, pole disparity, and pre-insertion resistor timing. What are the Technical Requirements of Circuit Breaker Timers?

 1. The instrument should be able to measure Open, Close, and Close-Open timings of three poles/phases with end-to-end connections.

2. The instrument should be able to measure the timings of various circuit breakers, including SF6, Air Blast, Minimum Oil, Bulk Oil, and Vacuum breakers.

3. The instrument shall provide 30 V DC trigger commands for breaker closing, opening, and close-open operations.

4.The operation timings should be shown in milliseconds on a four-line backlit LCD.

 5. The instrument’s range should be 0.1-1000 milliseconds, with a resolution of 0.1 milliseconds.

6. The Test Kit shall monitor pole discrepancy timing, or the time delay between poles during shutting and opening operations.

7.The circuit breaker timer should have an accuracy of 0.05% + one digit.

8.The device requires a power source of 240 V AC ± 20%, 50 Hz ± 5%. The device should be powered by both the mains and a rechargeable battery, with a continuous operating time of 5-6 hours.

9.The instrument should contain a built-in clock to record test findings, including date and time.

10. The equipment should have enough memory to save 100 test results.

 11. The instrument should have an intuitive menu-driven user interface.  The menu selections should be selected using the keypad.

12. The manufacturer shall provide a full set of test leads with appropriate lengths, insulation grade, terminators, and connections.Shrouded banana plug connections offer greater safety and are preferred.

13. The time interval meter’s test leads must be at least 15 meters long to test HV circuit breakers, including a PVC bobbin for winding.
